Jayden Daniels has joined the Heisman fraternity.
LSU’s record-setting quarterback was named the winner of the 89th Heisman Memorial Trophy on Saturday night at the Appel Room at Jazz at Lincoln Center in Columbus Center in New York City.
Daniels beat Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr., Oregon quarterback Bo Nix, and Ohio State wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr.
Daniels received 503 first-place votes, 217 second-place votes and 86 third-place votes. Runner-up Penix Jr. meanwhile received 292 first-place votes, 341 second-place votes and 143 third-place votes.
Daniels became the third LSU player to win the award and the second Tiger quarterback to hoist the award in the last five years. Joe Burrow won the Heisman during the Tigers’ 2019 National Championship run while running back Billy Cannon took home the honor in 1959.
Daniels was third in the nation this season in passing with 3,812 yards, averaging 317.7 yards per game, and threw 40 touchdowns to only four interceptions. The Tiger star also rushed for 1,134 yards and scored 10 rushing touchdowns.
Daniels was also responsible for 88 plays or 20 or more yards, the most of any player in college football.
Daniels’ most prolific game was against Florida as he became the first player in FBS history to rush for 200 yards and pass for 350 yards in a single game. In a 52-35 victory over the Gators, he rushed for 234 yards while throwing for 372.
Daniels joined former Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel of Texas A&M as the only players in Southeastern Conference history to rush for 1,000 yards and pass for 3,500 yards in a season. Daniels, however, is the only player in FBS history to finish his collegiate career with 12,000 passing yards and 3,000 rushing yards.
In addition to the Heisman, Daniels has also won the 2023 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, the Davey O’Brien Award, and the Walter Camp National Player of the Year award.
