LSU senior safety Andre Sam had two interceptions in a 62-0 defeat of the Army Black Knights Saturday night at Tiger Stadium. For his performance, the Iowa, LA native was named Defensive Player of the Week by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.
Sam, the transfer from Marshall University, had three tackles in addition to his two interceptions Saturday night. The shutout victory was the first of the year for the Tigers and the first team they held scoreless since New Mexico last season.
LSU’s defense held the Black Knight offense to 193 total yards of offense while only completing six passes for 42 yards. The longest gain for Jeff Monken’s offense was on an 18-yard carry. LSu also forced four turnovers in the game, with three interceptions and one fumble.
Sam and the LSU Tigers are currently on a bye this week as they prepare for their matchup with Alabama next weekend at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa. Kickoff is set for 6:45 p.m. and you can catch it on ESPN 103.7 Lafayette and 104.1 Lake Charles.
