BATON ROUGE — Tyler Shelvin has been named to the watch lists of two major college football awards.
The former Northside High and Notre Dame of Crowley standout was one of the three LSU players selected to the 2020 Bronko Nagurski Trophy Watch List. The other two Tigers to be named to the Nagurski watch list were safety Jacoby Stevens and cornerback Derek Stingley Jr.
The Nagurski Trophy Watch List includes 98 defensive standouts from 66 schools in all 10 Division I FBS conferences plus independents. The award is presented annually to the defensive player of the year in college football.
Shelvin has also been named to the Outland Trophy Watch List.
The 2020 Outland Trophy Watch List includes 85 interior linemen representing all 10 Division I FBS conferences and independents.
The 6-foot-3, 346-pound Shelvin had a breakout season in 2019 as he started 14 games, recording 39 tackles and 3.0 tackles for a loss as he helped the Tigers win the national championship.
Former LSU star and 2020 College Football Hall of Fame inductee Glenn Dorsey is LSU’s only Nagurski Trophy winner — a honor he claimed in 2007. Dorsey also won the Outland Trophy that same season.
