LSU freshman guard Cam Thomas has been named The Louisiana Sports Writers Association’s Men’s Basketball Player of the Week award, which is voted on by the state’s sports information directors along with select members of the media.
Thomas racked up a cumulative 99 points across the past three contests, helping the Tigers to a pair of wins over Nicholls and Texas A&M along with a tight loss at Florida.
The freshman drained a season-high five three-pointers in the 23-point victory over Texas A&M, finishing with 32 points in the blowout. Thomas also scored 29 points in a win over Nicholls and 28 points in loss to Florida.
Thomas currently ranks third nationally in scoring average amongst players with five or more games in the books and leads Division I in 20-point games for a freshman (6).
After averaging a double-double and helping her team to a home victory in the Southland Conference opener over Sam Houston State on Saturday, Nicholls’ Chelsea Cain was selected as the LSWA Women’s Basketball Player of the Week.
The sophomore forward had a breakout week for the Colonels, averaging 27.5 points and 12.0 rebounds in a pair of games as Nicholls capped off the week winning its SLC opener over one of the league favorites.
For the week, Cain shot 52.9 percent (18-for-34) from the field and was 19 of 23 (82.6 percent) from the free throw line.
