It had been quite some time since both Simpson and Plainview had won a state championship in girls’ and boys’ basketball, respectfully.

The Lady Broncos hadn’t won a state title since 2001, while it had been even longer for the Hornets, the last coming 60 years ago in 1965.

Both not only claimed the Class C state championships recently, but they can also boast sweeping the top honors on the Class C all-state teams, as chosen by a panel of the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.

Simpson landed three players on the team, led by sophomore standout Olivia Edwards (16.0 points per game), who claimed Outstanding Player honors, while head coach Lynsey Rachal captured Coach of the Year recognition.

Plainview senior Zequan Lewis (25.3 ppg) won Outstanding Player honors, while head coach Dustin Howard picked up Coach of the Year recognition for the first time on the boys’ side, having won two previous while coaching the Plainview girls’ squad.

Edwards, who helped guide Simpson to a 41-2 record, was joined on the squad by teammates Kodi Miller (10 ppg.) and Bella Hunnicutt (13 ppg). Miller, a junior, was a first-team selection, while the freshman Hunnicutt was a second-teamer.
