LSWA CLASS 1A ALL-STATE FOOTBALL TEAM
Written for the LSWA
A record-setting running back and a defensive back who led his team to its second LHSAA title in three years headline the LSWA’s Class 1A all-state football team.
Ascension Catholic’s Chad Elzy Jr., who rushed for 2,911 yards and 47 touchdowns, is the Outstanding Offensive Player on the 1A squad selected by a panel of sportswriters from across the state.
Dylan Day of Southern Lab was voted the Outstanding Defensive Player on the 1A team after leading his team to its second Division IV select title in three years.
Lee Roussel of Division IV select runner-up Riverside Academy was selected as the Coach of the Year.
Day, a Miami signee, returned five of his 10 interceptions for touchdowns, including a game-winning pick-six in the semifinals. He finished with 58 tackles and 30 pass breakups for the Kittens (12-2), who defeated Riverside Academy 42-35 in the title game.
ACHS’ Elzy emerged as a star in his first year as a starting running back. He averaged 14.7 yards per carry while leading the Bulldogs to the Division IV select quarterfinals.
Elzy ended the season with 3,468 all-purpose yards and scored 320 points. He ran for 461 yards on 27 carries with eight rushing TDs in a 77-43 win over Opelousas Catholic in the regional playoff round.
Elzy also caught a TD pass in that game and tied an LHSAA playoff record by scoring nine TDs in a playoff game.
Roussel led Riverside (12-2) to its first LHSAA title game since 2016, the year the Rebels won a Division III select title. It was Roussel’s second season at Riverside.
