Leave it to Les Miles to broaden his reputation as “The Mad Hatter” by adding a hat to his collection during the dog days of summer.
“@LSUCoachMiles is a man of many hats,” Dingman tweeted with the photo, a reference to Miles’ Twitter handle.
Dingman added “#MadHatter,” and to make sure real officials don’t think Miles is coming after their jobs, also added, “#SECofficialsarethebest @SEC.”
According to LSU, Miles decided to liven up a Friday afternoon football staff meeting with his get up to draw a laugh from his coaches. He even apparently threw one of the flags on the table, making a joking reference to delay of game.
Late Sunday night, LSU quarterback Anthony Jennings made his first foray onto Periscope, a popular live video streaming app.
In his brief appearance, Jennings offered few insights, other than to say he thought the Tigers would have a great season.
“I think we will be tremendous — SEC champions,” Jennings said. “I believe that.”
The Tigers junior took a few texted questions, none pertaining to his current legal situation or suspension from the LSU team. Jennings has been suspended since his arrest in late June with two other Tigers for unauthorized entry of an inhabited dwelling.
Miles said on ESPN last week he believes Jennings will eventually be able to return to the team and competition with sophomore Brandon Harris. Harris has done most of the work with LSU’s offense during summer seven-on-seven drills in Jennings’ absence.
The next time Jennings is expected to be heard from is Aug. 16 at LSU’s media day.
Fournette trolls Gators
Tailback Leonard Fournette has lobbed another volley in this summer’s ongoing social media cold war between the LSU and Florida football teams.
“US tigers just hustle,” Fournette wrote.
Fournette had one of his best games of 2014 against the Gators, rushing for a then-career-high 140 yards and two touchdowns on 27 carries in LSU’s 30-27 victory. The highlight was Fournette’s 12-yard touchdown run, in which he smashed into 200-pound safety Marcus Maye at the 4 and pushed him into the end zone.
Florida got the war of words started earlier this summer with a hype video that declared its program “DBU,” as in Defensive Back University, a moniker LSU claims for its success at sending defensive back to the NFL in recent years.
LSU safety Jamal Adams shot back on Twitter, “Lol, just because yall got a little video, don’t make you DBU. Just saying.”
Hargreaves said at SEC Media Days earlier this month that the battle for DBU between Florida and LSU “won’t be close,” but later said, “if they want DBU, they can have it.”
Florida plays at LSU on Oct. 17.
Live, from Death Valley …
As has been his annual routine, Miles will make his last big preseason public appearance Wednesday when he speaks to this week’s meeting of the Baton Rouge Rotary Club. The lunch meeting will be at 12:15 p.m. at Stadium Club South in Tiger Stadium.
