Marquette started out strong and stayed hot to hand the LSU Tigers their first loss of the season in the FanDuel Legends Classic.
The Golden Eagles opened up the game going up 10-0 before the first media break. After the fast start, the Tiger were able to cut away at the lead and only be down by two points heading into the locker room.
The Golden Eagles started the second half in similar manner, hitting everything in sight to go up by almost double digits again early on. But Ben Simmons was able to give the Tigers the lead for the first time off of a layup with 26 seconds left in regulation. But with nine seconds left, Josh Gray had his fifth foul of the game, which brought JuJuan Johnson to the line and proceeded to make both shots to give Marquette the win.
Simmons led the way for the Tigers with 21 points, 20 boards, seven assists, and two steals on the night. Tim Quarterman was right behind him with 20 points, six boards, three assists, and one block.
The Golden Eagles had three players all with 16 points on the night. Henry Ellenson was one of those three and led the team in rebounds with 11 and was perfect from the three point line.
The Tigers (3-1) will now wait to see if they’ll take on either Arizona State or NC State tomorrow with tipoff set for 4:30 pm.
