Lafayette Parish Schools are tentatively scheduled to start classes on Tuesday, September 8, 2020. The original start date was mid-August. But after consulting with health officials, the decision was made on Tuesday, August 4, to delay the start of school.

According to a statement, members of the Lafayette Parish School System believe this move is beneficial to all residents of Lafayette Parish. The delayed start will also give educators more time to effectively train and learn how to operate a classroom in the safest manner possible during a pandemic.

When students return to the classroom, students will be encouraged to wear a mask, wash hands, cover a cough, and practice social distancing.

If a student arrives at his or her classroom without a mask, a mask will be provided. This is according to a report from the Louisiana Department of Education. The department of Education has partnered with the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security to make sure all students have a face mask to wear at school.

There will be one million masks available to Louisiana schools. Each school will receive at least one reusable/ washable mask for each student and faculty member. Then an additional 2000 disposal masks will be available for visitors. Every school will also receive three thermometers to keep on campus.

Schools employees will have plenty of access to hygienic supplies such as soap, sanitizer, disinfectant wipes, and spray, paper towels, and tissues to ensure a clean learning environment.
