McNeese took home the Southland Conference Freshman of the Year honors for both women’s and men’s basketball.
For the women, McNeese’s Kaili Chamberlain becomes the first Cowgirl in 30 years to be named SLC Freshman of the Year. Chamberlain joins Robin Daniels (1992) and Aretha Brown (1984) as Cowgirls to earn the honor.
Chamberlain, who also earned All-Southland Conference second team honors, led McNeese in scoring with 12.8 points per game. She also had an 87.8 free throw percentage in SLC play and scored in double figures in 12 games.
Chamberlain is joined on the All-SLC women’s teams by teammate junior Desirae Hansen who earned third team honors. Hansen leads the Cowgirls in three-point field goal percent (45.3) and is second on the team in scoring (11.0 ppg.).
For the men, Johnathan Massie was named SLC Freshman of the Year.
Massie averaged 5.3 points and 3.2 rebounds per game while playing in 29 contests and making 23 starts for the Cowboys.
Massie is only the second McNeese men’s player to earn the honor. The other was Jason Coleman (2000).
Christian Shumate meanwhile picked up All-SLC third team honors after leading McNeese in scoring (12.6 points per game) and rebounding (6.7 rebounds per game).
Shumate also averaged 15.6 points and 6.6 rebounds in SLC contests.
