A former McNeese Cowboy will take that next step forward in his baseball career.

All-Southland Conference outfielder and Rawlings Gold Glove winner, Conner Westenburg, has signed a free agent contract with the San Diego Padres. Westenburg was a four-year letterman with the Cowboys and was a school record holder for most lead-off home runs hit, slashing .328/.429/.561 with seven home runs, 33 RBIs, and nine doubles. The Porter, Texas native led the Southland Conference with nine triples and 27 stolen bases.

Westenburg will report to Arizona on Sunday to begin his professional career.

“I’m super excited to continue my career,” said Westenburg. “I had a couple of offers during the draft, but my advisor suggested that we pass. I’m going in with the mindset of competing and playing as hard as I can and to just have fun playing the game I love.”

Westenburg will be the seventh former Cowboy currently playing in the pro ranks. That move was also the second southwest Louisiana product the Padres have signed in the last few days. The other was LSUE’s Dawson Willis.
