It was a far from clean ballgame on Monday afternoon with both Notre Dame (10-3) and LSU (9-4) unable to put points on the board for much of the first half. In fact, it wasn’t until a 46-yard field goal from Justin Yoon with four seconds left in the half that a score was put on the board.
LSU got lucky to start the second half after a muffed punt by the Irish gave the Tigers ideal field position and a chance to take the lead. They made the most of their opportunity with a 20 yard pass from Danny Etling to Derrius Guice to take a 7-3 lead.
The Fighting Irish made it interesting though with another field goal late in the third quarter from Yoon to make it 7-6. The Tigers stayed out in front with another touchdown pass to Guice early in the fourth quarter to make it 14-6.
However, a big pass from Ian Book to Michael Young, followed by a successful two-point conversion tied things up at 14 with 7:49 left on the clock. LSU chipped away at the clock with a methodical 12-play drive to get back out in front by three after a chip-shot field goal from Jack Gonsoulin.
The Irish got the ball back with 2:03 left in regulation, but it only took them 35 seconds to take the lead with Book connecting with Miles Boykin on a phenomenal one-handed grab that he took into the endzone for what would be the game-winner.
