Olympics Roundup: August 2nd

This summer, the Olympics are taking place in Paris, France.

Here at ESPN Southwest Louisiana, we want to make sure you are kept in the know with all things happening regarding the USA as well as athletes with local ties.

Trampoline Gymnastics

  • Lafayette’s Aliaksei Shostak didn’t place in the final of the Men’s Trampoline Gymnastics.

Golf

  • Xander Schauffele was tied for the lead with Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama and Britain’s Tommy Fleetwood after a -5 second round put the PGA Champion at 11-under. Scottie Scheffler was 6-under, Collin Morikawa was 4-under, and Wyndham Clark was 1-over through the second round.

Shooting

  • Katelyn Morgan Abeln and Ada Claudia Korkhin of the US both competed in qualifying for the 25m Pistol Precision event. Both went on to also compete in the 25m Rapid qualification.
  • In the Men’s Skeet qualification, both Vincent Hancock and Connor Lynn Prince represented the US.
  • In the 50m Rifle 3 Positions Women’s final, Sagen Maddalena took home the silver medal for the United States.

Athletics

  • Heath Baldwin, Harrison Williams, and Zachery Ziemek competed in the Men’s Decathlon.
  • Daniel Haugh represented the US in the Group A qualifying for the Hammer Throw competition. Rudy Winkler was in Group B of the same event.
  • Rachel Glenn and Vashti Cunningham competed in the Women’s High Jump qualification event.
  • Hobbs Kessler, Cole Hocker, and Yared Nuguse represented the US in the Men’s 1500m first round.
  • In the Women’s 100m, former LSU Tiger Sha’carri Richardson dominated the field, winning her heat that included fellow Americans Melissa Jefferson and Twanisha Terry.
  • Karissa Schweizer, Elise Cranny, and Whittni Morgan raced the Women’s 5000m in Round 1.
  • Tori Franklin, Jasmine Moore, and Keturah Orji all participated in the Women’s Triple Jump qualification.
  • Valarie Allman was in Group A of the Women’s Discus Throw
  • Vernon Norwood, Shamier Little, Bryce Deadmon, and Kaylyn Brown set a new world record in the 4×400 Relay mixed team with a time of 3:08.80
  • Nia Akins, Allie Wilson, Juliette Whittaker participated in Round 1 of the Women’s 800m
  • Ryan Crouser, Joe Kovacs, and Payton Otterdahl were in the men’s shot put.
  • In Group B of the Women’s Discus, the US was represented by Veronica Fraley and Jayden Ulrich.
  • Grant Fisher finished with a bronze medal in the Men’s 10,000m final. Nico Young and William Kincaid also represented the US.

Rowing

  • The US men’s pair team finished fourth in their final.
  • The US Women’s pair team also finished fourth in their final.
  • In the LWT Double Sculls, the US finished sixth in their final.

Diving

  • The US team of Greg Duncan and Tyler Downs finished eighth in the Synchronised 3m Springboard finals.

Swimming

  • Caeleb Dressel and Thomas Heilman participated in the Men’s 100m butterfly heats.
  • Kate Douglass and Alex Walsh had heats in the Women’s 200m IM as well as advanced to the semifinals.
  • Katie Ledecky and Paige Madden ran heats in the 800m freestyle.
  • In the Mixed 4×100 Medley, Abbey Weitzeil, Caeleb Dressel, Regan Smith, and Charlie Swanson took part for the United States.
  • Caeleb Dressel didn’t medal in the Men’s 50m freestyle.
  • Regan Smith won silver in the Women’s 200m backstroke and Phoebe Bacon just missed the podium.
  • Carson Foster placed fourth in the Men’s 200m IM.
  • Caeleb Dressel was in the semifinals of the Men’s 100m Butterfly

Archery

  • The US defeated Uzbekistan 6-0 in the Mixed Team 1/8 Elimination Round and the quarterfinal 5-3 over Japan before losing the semifinal to Germany 5-3. The US would win the Bronze Media over India 6-2.

Tennis

  • Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul were eliminated in the semifinals by Australia’s Ebden and Peers 7-5, 6-2. Fritz and Paul will compete for a bronze medal.

Sailing

  • Erika Reineke ran a pair of races in the Women’s Dinghy event.
  • In Mixed Dinghy, the US was represented by Stu McNay and Lara Weiss-Dallman in two races.
  • Maggie Shea and Stephanie Roble placed 10th in the Skiff medal race.
  • Ian Barrows and Hans Henken captured the bronze medal in the Men’s Skiff medal race.

3×3 Basketball

  • The US women’s team defeated France 14-13 in their pool match. They later defeated Canada 18-17 in overtime.
  • The Mens team was defeated by China 21-17.

Equestrian

  • The US brought home the silver medal in the Jumping Team Final.

Beach Volleyball

  • Chase Budinger and Miles Evans were defeated by Adrian Gavira Callado and Pablo Herrera Allepuz 21-18, 21-11.
  • Kelly Cheng and Sara Hughes defeated Germany’s Svenja Mueller and Cinja Tillmann 21-18, 21-18.

Football

  • The US men’s team was eliminated from the Olympics by Morocco 4-0.

Canoe Slalom

  • Casey Eichfeld was in the Men’s Kayak Cross Time Trial.
  • Evy Leibfarth competed in the Women’s Kayak Cross Time Trial.

Boxing

  • Alyssa Mendoza fell in the 57kg Round of 16 to Brazil’s Jucielen Cerqueira Romeu 4-1.

Volleyball

  • The United States defeated Japan in Pool C play 3-1.

BMX Racing

  • Cameron Wood placed fifth in the Men’s final while Alise Willoughby was sixth in the women’s final.
