Olympics Roundup: July 29

This summer, the Olympics are taking place in Paris, France.

Here at ESPN Southwest Louisiana, we want to make sure you are kept in the know with all things happening regarding the USA as well as athletes with local ties.

Tennis

  • Former LSU star, Neal Skupski, fell in doubles action to Tomas Machac and Adam Pavlasek in a 10-8 tiebreaker.
  • Coco Gauff defeated Maria Lourdes Carle 6-1, 6-1
  • Rajeev Ram and Austin Krajicek defeated Alex de Minaur and Alexei Popyrin in Doubles.
  • Danielle Collins defeated Caroline Wozniacki 6-3, 3-6, 6-3
  • Emma Navarro defeated Viktoriya Tomova 6-7, 6-4, 6-1
  • Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul defeated Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime and Milos Raonic 7-6, 6-4.
  • Jessica Pegula fell to Elina Svitolina 6-4, 1-6, 3-6

Beach Volleyball

  • Former LSU Tigers Kristen Nuss and Taryn Kloth defeated Artacho del Solar and Taliqua Clancy, the silver medalists from 2020, 21-16, 21-16.
  • Former NBA player Chase Budinger and Miles Evans defeated Youssef Krou and Arnaud Gauthier-Rat 21-14, 21-11.

Swimming

  • Katie Grimes (Silver) and Emma Weyant (Bronze) both were on the podium in the Women’s 400m Individual Medley.
  • Luke Hobson took home bronze in the 200m freestyle final.
  • Ryan Murphy captured bronze in the 100m backstroke final.

Gymnastics

  • For the first time since 2008, the US Men’s Gymnastics team was on the podium with a bronze finish.

Skateboarding

  • Jagger Eaton (Silver) and Nyjah Huston (Bronze) added to the medal count for the US, who currently holds the lead.

Basketball

  • The US Women’s squad opened their quest for gold with a massive 102-76 win over Japan. A’Ja Wilson led the way with 24 points and 13 rebounds.

Badminton

  • Jennie Gai and Vinson Chiu fell in a Mixed Doubles match.
  • Chiu and Yuan were defeated by Japan’s Hoki and Kobayashi in group play

Table Tennis

  • Lily Zhang defeated Bruna Takahashi 4-2 in the Women’s Round of 32 while Amy Wang lost to Adriana Diaz 4-2.

Shooting

  • William Hinton and Derrick Scott Mein competed in the qualification stages of the Trap Shooting event.

Judo

  • Jack Yonezuka lost in the Round of 32 for the Mens 73 kg to Adil Osmanov.

Fencing

  • Elizabeth Tartakovski, Magda Skarbonkiewicz, and Tatiana Nazlymov all lost their Women’s Sabre round of 32 matches.
  • Gerek Meinhardt, Alexander Massialas, and Nick Itkin all secured victories in the men’s foil round of 32.
  • Nick Itkin won his round of 16 match with Meinhardt and Massialas were defeated.
  • Itkin also defeated Guillaume Bianchi in the quarterfinals of foil. He then lost in the semifinals to Filippo Macchi, but rebounded by winning the bronze media 15-12 over Kazuki Iimura.

Boxing

  • Josuha Edwards was defeated by Diego Lenzi in the Mens’ 92 kg round of 16.
  • Jajaira Gonzales lost to Beatriz Iasmin Soares Ferreira in the Women’s 60 kg division.

Hockey

  • The United States and Spain drew 1-1 in group play.

Rugby

  • The US was defeated 31-14 by France in the Women’s Seven group play. The US then defeated Great Britain 17-7 in the quarter-finals

Water Polo

  • The US was defeated 13-11 in a close contest with Spain.

Volleyball

  • The US fell to China 3-2 in Pool A play.

Surfing

  • John John Florence fell to Jack Robinson while Griffin Colapinto lost to Kauli Vaast in their respective heats.
