Olympics Roundup: July 30

This summer, the Olympics are taking place in Paris, France.

Here at ESPN Southwest Louisiana, we want to make sure you are kept in the know with all things happening regarding the USA as well as athletes with local ties.

Shooting

  • Derrick Scott Mein and William Hinton participated in day two of Trap qualifying. Mein placed fifth in the final.
  • Rachel Leighanne Tozier and Ryann Paige Phillips competed in the opening round of women’s trap qualifying.

Badminton

  • Kerry and Annie Xu were defeated by Gabriela and Stefani Stoeva 21-18, 21-12.
  • Howard Shu lost to Toma Popov Jr 21-11, 21-12.
  • The team of Chiu/Yuan were taken down by Lee/Wang 21-12, 21-13.

Rowing

  • Kara Kohler and Jacob Plihal competed in the Single Sculls quarterfinals.
  • The US had a team in the Double Sculls semifinals in the Rowing competition.

Boxing

  • Roscoe Hill was defeated by Billal Bennama 3-2
  • Alyssa Mendoza defeated Samadova 3-2 in the 57 kg round of 32

Tennis

  • Coco Gauff was defeated by Donna Vekic 6-7, 2-6 in a match that was marred by controversy.
  • Taylor Fritz defeated Jack Draper 6-7, 6-3, 6-2
  • Danielle Collins won her match over Camila Osorio 6-0, 4-6, 6-3
  • Emma Navarro lost to Qinwen Zheng 7-6, 6-7, 1-6
  • Tommy Paul overcame Jakub Mensik 6-3, 6-1
  • The team of Ram/Krajicek defeated Monteiro/Seyboth Wild 6-4, 7-6

Swimming

  • Former LSU swimmer Brooks Curry along with Chris Guiliano, Drew Kibler, and Blake Pieroni qualified for the 4×200 freestyle relay final.
  • Matt Fallon and Josh Matheny competed in the men’s 200m breaststroke heats.
  • Thomas Heilman and Luca Urlando competed in the Mens’ 200m butterfly heats
  • Jack Alexy and Chris Guiliano competed in the Men’s 100m freestyle heat.
  • Katie Grimes and Katie Ledecky toop park in the 1500m Freestyle heats.
  • Torri Huske and Gretchen Walsh competed in the heats for the Women’s 100m Freestyle
  • Katharine Berkoff (Bronze) and Regan Smith (Silver) each medaled in the 100m backstroke final.
  • Bobby Finke took home the silver in the 800m freestyle final, the same event that he won Gold three years prior.
  • The US took home silver in the 4×200 freestyle relay as Great Britain took the gold.

Cycling BMX Freestyle

  • Hannah Roberts and Perris Benegas took part in the women’s park qualification event.
  • Justin Dowell and Marcus Christopher also competed in Men’s Park Qualification.

Fencing

  • Poland defeated the US in Team Fencing 31-29.
  • Korea defeated the US in Women’s Epee Team, 45-39.
  • The US responded by beating Egypt 44-30 in Epee placement 7-8

Sailing

  • The team of Ian Barrows and Hans Henken competed in three different events in the men’s scuff
  • Stephanie Roble and Maggie Shea also competed in three events in the women’s scuff.
  • Noah Lyons competed in five races for men’s windsurfing and Dominique Stater did five races for women’s windsurfing.

Volleyball

  • The United States defeated Germany 3-2 in Pool C

Beach Volleyball

  • The duo of Partain/Benesh defeated Abicha/Elgraoui 2-0.
  • Chase Budinger and Miles Evan were defeated by Stefan Boermans and Yorick de Groot 21-13, 21-15

Canoe Slalom

  • Evy Liebfarth had two runs in the Canoe Single Heats

Archery

  • Catalina Gnoriega won her Round of 32 match before losing in the Round of 16.

Rugby Sevens

  • The US lost to New Zealand 24-12 in the semis before defeating Australia to capture the bronze medal.

Water Polo

  • The US defeated Romania 14-8 in Group A play.

3×3 Basketball

  • Germany took down the US 17-13 in Round 1
  • On the men’s side, Serbia defeated the US 22-14

Gymnastics

  • The US women’s Team captured gold, making Simone Biles the most decorated gymnastics Olympian in US history.

Football

  • The US defeated Guinea 3-0 in Group A play.
