Louisiana diamond sports are on a roll as of late.
After both baseball and softball swept their respective opponents over the weekend to open Sun Belt play, Karly Heath and Jackson Nezuh were each honored by the conference, with Heath being named SBC Player of the Week for softball and Nezuh being the SBC Pitcher of the Week for baseball.
Heath posted four extra-base hits, scored seven runs, and even completed the doubleheader cycle over the weekend at Southern Miss. The South Carolina transfer had a single and triple in Game 1 with a home run and double in the second game of the day.
She then hit her second home run of the series on Sunday as well as starting the game in the circle, pitching for 3-2/3 innings with only two hits allowed.
Heath crossed the plate five times on the weekend, scoring at least once in each of the three games and driving in a run in each game as well. Heath now leads the Cajuns in home runs (7), extra-base hits (12), and RBIs (24) while hitting at a .338 clip and pitching at a 2.55 ERA in 22 innings.
This is Louisiana Softball’s third award after both Sam Landry (2/14) and Meghan Schorman (2/28) were named SBC Pitcher of the Week for softball.
Meanwhile, for Cajuns baseball, Jackson Nezuh was named SBC Pitcher of the Week as well as a National Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball for his eight-inning, one-hit performance on Sunday against Arkansas State.
The St. Cloud, FL native took a perfect game into the seventh after retiring the first 18 Red Wolves he faced in the contest while striking out nine. With the win, Nezuh has improved to 3-0 on the young season.
His perfect game was broken up by back-to-back walks to start the seventh inning before a base hit took the no-hitter away as well. The Florida State transfer now has a 24-3 strikeout-to-walk ratio through his last three outings and is second on the team in punchouts heading into a weekend series with South Alabama on Friday.
However, Louisiana (14-6) has a pair of home midweek games before heading east. Grambling comes to Russo Park on Tuesday before Southeastern Louisiana comes to town the following night on Wednesday. Both matchups have a first pitch of 6:00 p.m.
