The New Orleans Pelicans start their season on Wednesday but made headlines on Monday after signing one of their young stars to a contract extension.
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Pels have signed Trey Murphy III to a four-year, $112 million rookie contract extension.
During his first three seasons in the Big Easy, Murphy appeared in 198 games with 89 stars while averaging 11.7 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game. This past season was the best of his career as he averaged 14.8 points a game as the Pelicans made a playoff appearance against the top-seeded Oklahoma City Thunder.
Injuries have plagued Murphy during his young career as he has missed 20+ games in two of his three seasons, including 25 games missed in 2023-2024 to open the season.
In the offseason, the Pelicans made a big-time move by acquiring All-Star guard Dejounte Murray from the Atlanta Hawks, which will add more playmaking depth to the young Pelicans core that includes Murphy.
The season gets underway on Wednesday against the Chicago Bulls. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. and can be seen on The Action Channel – KXKW 32.1 – your home for the New Orleans Pelicans in Acadiana.
