Friday night in LaPlace, two undefeated powerhouses in St. Charles Catholic and Teurlings Catholic battled it out in a Week 3 contest. The two-time defending state champion Comets were able to run away with it in the second half with a 48-20 win over Teurlings.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
St Charles Catholic started with the football early and wasted no time getting down the field, punching it in on a one-yard touchdown run just one minute into the game.
Teurlings Catholic answered with a methodical drive that resulted in a touchdown pass from quarterback Preston Welch to Bradford Cain to tie the game at seven a piece.
The Comets were able to move the ball deep into Rebels’ territory, but a 3rd down stand held St Charles to a field goal and a 10-7 lead with 1:43 left in the first quarter.
2:12 seconds into the second quarter, KJ James powered his way into the end zone from four yards out to give Teurlings the 14-10 lead over St Charles.
Three minutes later, the Comets answered with a 37-yard field goal to cut into the lead at 14:13. Later in the quarter, Jeremiah Wills took off on a 22-yard touchdown run to give St Charles a 19-14 lead, but not before a successful two-point conversion made it 21-14.
With three seconds left in the first half, St Charles Catholic connected on another field goal to make it 24-14 Comets at the break.
Early in the third quarter, St. Charles added yet another field goal to push the lead to 13 points at 27-14 over Teurlings.
In the first play of the fourth quarter, Brady St. Pierre punched it in from one yard out as the Comets led the Rebels 34-14 at this point in the game.
After 24 straight points by the Comets, Teurlings answered with a 25-yard touchdown run by Preston Welch to make it 34-20, but a missed PAT kept it a 14-point game.
St. Charles Catholic extended their lead once again with a one-yard touchdown run to make it 41-20 with four minutes remaining in the contest.
With two minutes remaining, Preston Welch was picked off and it was returned for a touchdown to make it 48-20 as the final score.
BIG NUMBER: 24
The Comets scored 24 straight points to put themselves ahead 34-14 headed into the fourth quarter and it was enough to take down the Rebels Friday night.
