The Vikings of Opelousas Catholic were looking for their first state championship in school history on the baseball diamond as they battled Glenbrook on Friday afternoon in Sulphur.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The first inning was full of scoring as the Vikings scored 10 runs in the frame. Mark Collins started the game with a single before an error allowed Jordan Luna to reach. Then Beckett Boyd lined a two-run triple to left to make it 2-0. Then, a walk and hit by pitch loaded the bases for a two-run single from Kross Gillen. With the score 4-0, another Vikings base hit and walk loaded the bases again as a hit by pitch and a pair of walks brought in three more runs to make it a 7-0 lead.
Later in the frame, three more runs came into score by way of a hit by pitch, walk, and a passed ball as OC took a 10-0 lead after the first.
Throughout the game, the Vikings only managed one more base hit, but the damage had been done as Luna pitched a five-inning no-hitter for Opelousas Catholic, walking just one batter and striking out five in a 10-0 mercy rule win for the state title.
