Carencro Golden Bears quarterback Chantz Babineaux’s 2023 season has gotten off to an electric start.
In week one versus Alexandria Senior High, Babineaux completed 16 out of 21 pass attempts for 288 yards and five passing touchdowns and carried the ball seven times for 50 yards. Then, with less than four minutes left in the game, he ran into the endzone to put Carencro up by 20 points.
Despite feeling under the weather during the school week, Babineaux had another explosive and efficient game last Friday versus the visiting Barbe Buccaneers. The Cro Dome was bumping regardless of the bad weather as six of Babineaux’s 14 completions went for touchdowns for 332 yards. The sophomore also ran the ball eight times for 56 yards in a 60-14 victory.
Question: What did Barbe’s defense show you last Friday that led you to have the night you did?
Answer: The coaches and I were talking about how the cornerbacks were in press bail and half-turns so I knew we would have a good passing game going. I knew we had all of our numbers in the box so it was just about our offensive line and all of our skill (players) executing the plays.
Q: You have 12 total touchdowns through the first two games. What do you attribute this fast start to?
A: I would just say putting the time and work in. As my coach said, I have a few things to improve on and I just need to do things the right way.
Q: How has the transition from wide receiver to quarterback gone from your perspective?
A: The process has been good. The big thing is I still need to learn and build on being a leader. It’s different being a leader at the wide receiver position but when you are a quarterback, you need to be more vocal.
Q: Where have you seen yourself grow the most since the beginning of the offseason?
A: I would say my knowledge of the game has grown the most. My vision has also really improved from there.
Q: What is it going to take for you and this team to defeat a good Southside team and remain undefeated?
A: I think we just need to believe in ourselves and practice hard. That’s it, it’s going to be a dogfight. The better dog will come out on top.
Carencro will play at Southside this Thursday in St. Martinville. Pregame begins at 6:45 and kickoff is set for 7 p.m. and you can listen to the action live on Z105.9 or the free mobile app.
