Kaplan has been off to a hot start this season. In Cory Brodie’s third year, the Pirates were 6-1 heading into their week eight matchup against St. Martinville. The Tigers were up 32-29 with a minute to go. Daylon Landry came in clutch however with a 24-yard touchdown with 50 seconds to go to elevate Kaplan to 7-1.
In the game, Landry carried the ball 34 times for 226 yards, four touchdowns, including that game-winning score, and had a two-point conversion as the Pirates defeated St. Martinville 36-32 last Friday night.
In the eight-game season, Landry has carried the football 125 times for 969 yards, good for a 7.75 yards per carry average. He’s also caught nine passes for 214 yards and has scored 12 touchdowns as the Pirates have racked up the most wins in a season since 2019 and are headed to the playoffs.

Question: What were you and the coaching staff seeing from the Tigers’ defense that gave you the opportunity to have a big game?
Answer: We noticed that we needed to run to the weak side of the line because they were overloading on the strong side. That led to some holes opening up and allowing us to run by defenders.
Q: Looking at your game-winning touchdown. Can you break down the play call and what you saw during the play?
A: I just had to follow my guard on the play. Bradyn Beard gave me a great block that gave me an open hole to run through and I was able to get into the endzone for the winning touchdown.
Q: Talk about the great job that your offensive line did last Friday, opening holes and allowing you to make plays in open space.
A: They’ve done an amazing job. If it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t be able to break so many long runs and score so many touchdowns.
Q: Where have you seen yourself grow the most from the offseason to this late in the season?
A: I’ve really working on my vision and running as a ball carrier this season. I’ve been able to run into people less and have found the hole more often, which has led to more big runs.
Q: What will it take for this team to take down the Bears of Church Point on Friday?
A: We just need to keep working hard and keep up our intensity. If we stay focused as well, we will walk away with the win.
Next up for the Kaplan Pirates will be a matchup against the Church Point Bears. That game will be played on Friday, October 27th at 7:00 p.m.
