It’s a new era for the Lafayette High Mighty Lions.
New coach Garrett Kreamer took over the program this year and through five games, he has made plenty of improvements. The Lions’ offense has been explosive and that was on full display last Friday night in a 56-29 victory over St. Martinville.
The Lions now have to turn their attention to a very difficult district slate. It begins this week with Sam Houston and Coach Kreamer will look to have his team ready to go. He is the subject of today’s Prep Profile Q&A.
QUESTION: Alright Coach. Let’s kind of back it up to the offseason here. You took over the program. What were the first things you want to get implemented and how did that offseason program look for you guys?
ANSWER: It started off hiring a good staff. We have a good staff in place. We’re excited about what we got in the future. Our kids have learned the schemes on offense, defense, special teams. So just now it’s just executing every single day, just building our program. Everything that we believe in, our core values and the kids are buying in, they’re doing well. I am proud of them so far.
Q: In the first few games of the season here. How has that translated? How has it looked on the field and how have you felt about the results?
A: Yeah, we’re pleased right now. The kids are playing hard and that’s all you can ask. We’re going to continue to play hard and get better each week and all we can just focus on on us every week, you know, and just continue to play our best ball.
Q: Just about halfway through the season here. Do you feel like your team has an identity, something that you really think is their biggest strength?
A: Yeah, I think so. We like to spread it out, throw the football and then also run it whenever we have the numbers in the box. So that’s our offensive mindset and the defense. We just gotta stop them and play our team ball.
Q: The second-half of the year usually shifts the focus to district play. So where are you guys as far as that focus is concerned?
A: We play in a tough district. You have got to bring it every single week and we know and we understand how talented all these teams are. So we have to play our best football down the stretch.
Q: And lastly, coach, week in, week out, what’s the one thing that you really want your team to be able to focus on?
A: Just effort, playing together, being a brother and being the best you can.
