The Rayne High School Mighty Wolves have been off to a very good 4-1 start to the 2023 season thanks to a productive offense that highlights their running back, Kylin Wheeler.
Wheeler has been a spark for Rayne as his talent has been shown on the field whether he is running, catching, or throwing the ball and they were all on full display last Friday against Crowley.
On the road, Wheeler carved up the Gent defense as he was involved in three touchdowns. He ran the ball eight times for 54 yards and a score while having two passes go his way for 120 yards with him finding pay dirt on one of them and then had a 65-yard touchdown pass as the Might Wolves won a shootout 68-47.
On the season, Wheeler has carried the ball 36 times for 285 yards (7.9 ypc) and five touchdowns while in the receiving game, he’s caught 19 passes for 464 yards and got into the endzone five more times. Head Coach Kaine Guidry has also given him some opportunities as a kickoff returner and has recorded 79 return yards.
Question: What were you seeing from the Gent defense that allowed you to have the game that you had?
Answer: I saw that they were very committed to being in the box. They left a lot of one-on-ones on the outside so that gave me more opportunities of getting the ball and making moves on defenders to make them miss and do what I do best to help the team win.
Q: What can you tell us about your touchdown pass against Crowley? What was the play design that led to the score?
A: We saw that they were biting on our run plays and the safety was dropping down. That gave us an opportunity to take a shot with one of our receivers.
Q: We’re halfway into the season and the offense has been explosive. Can you talk about what’s gone into this unit at least 49 in three out of five games thus far?
A: Our chemistry and the way we work together as an offense from the running backs to the quarterback to the receivers. We’re all on the same page so that gives all of us a chance to show out. We have some very explosive players like me, Joseph, Korey, our new quarterback Dylan, and our good lineman.
Q: Which NFL player do you model your game after and relate to the most?
A: I would say DeSean Jackson. I’m able to play deep and win the deep balls as I get behind defenders. I’m able to track the ball deep and make big plays whether it’s post routes or fade routes.
Q: What will it take for this team to beat the Eunice Bobcats and improve to 5-1 on the season?
A: We will need to stick to our game plan. We’ll have to be physical because Eunice has always been a physical team with us. If we’re able to stay physical and stay true to our assignments, I think we can come out on top.
The Mighty Wolves of Rayne will look to get their fifth win of the season as they host the 3-2 Eunice Bobcats this Friday. Kickoff at Rayne Stadium will be at 7:00.
