The Southside Sharks head into the final week of the regular season with a 7-2 overall record as they prepare for another playoff run under Josh Fontenot. However, the Broncos of Sam Houston stand in their way as the final opponent of the regular season.
Junior safety Carson Goulas, who has missed six games due to an arm injury, is back in the defensive secondary and provides a spark to a young defense. Nicknamed the “Little Ball of Dynamite” by myself, Goulas flies to the football and makes things happen while being a passionate leader for Ben Mouton’s defense.
QUESTION: Carson, you’ve missed most of the season with an injury. What was it like standing on the sidelines, getting a different perspective of the game?
ANSWER: It was just nice to see my team be able to go out there and still get the job done without me and it was nice to be able to still be a part of the team. Even though I wasn’t on the field with them, I was still able to help lead in any way I could. It was nice to see them get the job done.
Q: The last two weeks, you’ve been able to work yourself back into the game with a nice night against Lafayette. What can you tell me about this final week of the regular season and preparing for the playoffs?
A: It’s certainly a big week for us. We know what we have to get done. We know it’s a big opponent and we have to come in and play as hard as we can to where we know we can go in the playoffs and make a run at state.
Q: As a junior, you’re still one of the leaders of this defense. This season five sophomores have made a key impact for this Sharks team. What does that say about the future of the Southside defense?
A: It’s great having the younger guys out there and gaining that experience getting out there with us. They’re just as hard workers as any one of us out there. It’s been fun having them on the field.
Q: What’s the message this week knowing that it’s the final week of the regular season before the playoffs?
A: The message is to just send a statement to everybody in the playoffs that we’re getting ready to play.
Q: With an offense like this that’s averaging close to 350 yards per game on the ground. How special has it been to watch guys like Andrew Angelle, Ramon Singleton Jr., and the rest of the Sharks offense do their thing?
A: Those guys get after it every Friday, every Thursday that we have to play. They put in the work and give it everything they have and we just hope they can continue that this Friday.
The Southside Sharks will battle the Sam Houston Broncos this Friday night at Sam Houston High School. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. with pregame beginning at 6:45 p.m. on Mustang 107.1.
