PREP PROFILE Q&A: Southside QB Andrew Angelle

Posted by mattmiguez on September 12, 2023 in Blogs, Featured, High School Sports, Latest News, Local News, Miguez's Blog, Sports News, What's Hot, What's New

The Southside Sharks battled with the Cecilia Bulldogs Friday night in an offensive showdown. Southside was able to hold on to win 49-46, but 500 yards on the ground from the Sharks played a huge factor in the outcome.

When you look at the stat line of quarterback Andrew Angelle, he had the lowest rushing total on his team with 86 yards on eight carries, but his two touchdowns were a driving factor in the success of Southside’s offense and he orchestrated the offense to help his three running backs go well over 100 yards each.

Following the critical win on the road, I had the opportunity to chat with Angelle about his team’s performance, their mindset heading into a tough district game with Carencro, and more.

Question: Dominant performance and a big win on the road tonight. What is the mindset of this team now that you guys are 2-0?

Answer: It’s a whole different mindset now. We’re going to slingshot ourselves into district now because that was a really impressive and really impactful win for our season and I couldn’t be more proud of our guys. It was awesome.

Q: You fought through a lower-body injury during the game, limping around on a few different occasions but you still managed to score on a long touchdown run. Can you talk about that play?

A: Whenever you get deep into the game like that, the adrenaline starts to kick in and you don’t really feel it. It hurt for like a play, but once the game really got going, I just kept moving.

Q: Your running backs had huge games against Cecilia. What did you think of their performances?

A: All three very different players as well. Ramon is just a ground-and-pound type of guy while Collin and Vernel were able to pull away with that speed. All three had very big, impactful runs for us tonight.

Q: Your defense helped you guys a lot as well, especially Khi Alexander with his two-point breakup and the critical interception to seal the win. What can you say about their performance?

A: Khi was incredible. The first half wasn’t great defensively and we know that, but they came out with the mindset that they were ready to get after it. Khi made a hell of a play, I mean, I can’t even explain it.

Q: You have a home game Thursday night against Carencro and there’s a bit of a rivalry there between these two teams. What can you tell me about the matchup?

A: That’s going to be a big one. There’s definitely a rivalry there. You know, we played really well against them last year and I know that they’re playing with a chip on their shoulder. It’s going to be a tough game, but we have a long week to prepare for it, and we’re going to be ready.

You can listen to the Southside Sharks take on the Golden Bears of Carencro High this Thursday night from St. Martinville High School on Mustang 107.1 FM. Also, the Carencro broadcast can be heard on Z105.9 with both pregame shows beginning at 6:45 p.m.
