The Louisiana Ragin Cajuns had one of their most complete performances to date on Saturday afternoon with a 53-3 win over the Troy Trojans to clinch the Sun Belt West Division for a second straight season.
How It Happened:
The Cajuns started things off with a nice 10-play drive that was capped off by a 12-yard touchdown pass from Levi Lewis to Ja’Marcus Bradley.
Troy got on the board late in the first quarter when Tyler Sumpter nailed a 30-yard field goal through the uprights. Raymond Calais responded in a big way on the next drive with a 27-yard touchdown run to make it a two-possession game.
From that point on, Louisiana started to take firm control of the ballgame with Trey Ragas leading the way with a 45-yard run to put them at the Trojans 20-yard line. Three plays later, he finished what he started with a tough one-yard touchdown.
After a three-and-out by Troy, Elijah Mitchell made it a 28-3 ballgame after a six-play drive that ended an 11-yard run by the Erath native. Just before halftime, Stevie Artigue made it a 31-3 game with a 49-yard field goal.
The former Lafayette High Mighty Lion picked up where he left off in the second half with a 45-yarder. Louisiana’s defense stepped up yet again on the next drive with Jordan Quibodeaux sacking Caleb Barker in the endzone for a safety. Ragas put the final nail in the Trojans coffin late in the third quarter with an eight-yard touchdown run.
Big Number: 26
The Cajuns defense was outstanding all night long, especially on third down. The Trojans couldn’t get it done, going 26 percent on third down.
Player of the Game: Levi Lewis
Lewis looked great once again through the air, going 21-for-33 for 273 yards and a touchdown on the way to a big win.
