The Louisiana women’s basketball team bounced back from Sunday’s loss to the University of Houston with a 90-45 win over LSU-Shreveport on Wednesday.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
After a turnover by Ty Doucet, LSU-Shreveport’s DeAuja Thompson drained a three-pointer to give the Pilots the early lead but that didn’t last very long.
Louisiana answered with a 9-0 run which began with a mid-range jumper by Tamera Johnson, followed by a Lanay Wheaton free throw, a corner three-pointer by Diamond Morrison and then after another LSUS turnover, Destiny Rice hit a three-pointer from the other corner.
The Ragin’ Cajuns pushed the lead to 11 points after a second-chance layup by Lafaedria Green with 1:19 left in the first.
The Pilots cut the lead down to six points after a three-pointer by Tatym Barnes and a layup by Angel Reese.
After a layup by Wheaton made it a 12-point lead early in the second quarter, LSUS cut it down to six before halftime. Neither team would score a bucket in the final 2:51 of the second quarter. At the break, Louisiana led 36-30.
The Ragin’ Cajuns came out strong in the second half with a 10-1 run, with Rice scoring six of those points. Louisiana’s lead ballooned up to 24 points at the end of the third. The Ragin’ Cajuns maintained their double-digit lead in the final quarter on way to its seventh win of the season.
BIG NUMBER: 86
The Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns were extremely efficient at the charity stripe as the team made 19-of-22 shots from the line for a healthy free throw percentage of 86.
PLAYERS OF THE GAME: TAMERA JOHNSON & ASHLYN JONES
Johnson led all scorers with 21 points on 6-of-12 shooting while also pulling down nine rebounds and going 8-of-8 at the free throw line. Jones meanwhile came off the bench to scored 16 points in the midday victory.
