Mylik Wilson had a tremendous freshman season and the Ragin’ Cajuns star was awarded for his efforts on Thursday.

The University of Louisiana freshman guard, and Rayville native, was named the Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year on Thursday in a vote by the league’s head coaches and media.

Wilson led all SBC freshmen in scoring (11.4), rebounds (5.5), steals (2.4) and minutes played (34.0). Wilson becomes the sixth Ragin’ Cajuns basketball player to earn the honor and the first since Shawn Long received the distinction back in 2013.

Wilson finished the regular season ranked in the top four of four categories for the Ragin’ Cajuns. Wilson was fourth overall in scoring (11.4), tied for third in rebounds (5.5), second in assists (2.9) and led the team in steals (2.4).

The 6-foot-3, 175-pound star also scored in double figures 15 times,  highlighted by a career-high 30 points in a come-from-behind victory on the road against Appalachian State on Jan. 6. Wilson had posted his first career double-double two days earlier against Troy, scoring 18 points and pulling down a career-best 13 rebounds.

In conference play, Wilson averaged 12.7 points and 6.2 rebounds per game to lead all freshmen with his 2.5 steals.

Wilson was the only Ragin’ Cajuns player to earn any kind of All-SBC honors.

UL enters the SBC Men’s Basketball Championships as the No. 8 seed and will host No. 9 seed Arkansas State in a first-round game on Saturday at the Cajundome. Tipoff is scheduled for 11 a.m.
