Saints Fans, Meet Michael Thomas

Posted by clintdomingue on April 29, 2016 in Featured

*Michael Thomas

With the 47th overall pick the New Orleans Saints selected wide receiver Michael Thomas out of Ohio State. So let’s look at what he can do on the field.

THE GOOD: Great Hands

The Saints for some time have improved over the last couple of years as it pertains to dropped balls. In 2014, the Saints dropped 30 balls and dropped only 17 balls just last season. Expect that number to drop some more with Thomas being part of this team. The former Buckeye has only dropped five passes in the last two seasons and has the potential to be a good replacement for Marques Colston.

THE BAD: Small Sample Size

This isn’t a major knock on the kid, but he only has had 110 receptions in the last two seasons. This is largely because of the style of offense that Ohio State prefers to run under Urban Meyer. Have his numbers been great? Not really when you put it up side by side against guys like Josh Doctson or Laquon Treadwell. At the end of the day, the small sample size he has is only a negative because it doesn’t tell us enough of what his upside/floor is.

THE UGLY: N/A

He played under Urban Meyer, was relatively successful, has solid speed, and can get separation against press coverage.

VERDICT: Thumbs Up

When I first saw this pick, it confused me because I couldn’t figure out why the Saints would draft a wide receiver in the second round of the draft when there were still players out that could fulfill a need.
