The Black and Gold added more depth to their secondary on Wednesday by bringing back veteran safety Johnathan Abram.
Abram is headed back to New Orleans after agreeing to another one-year deal. Numerous Saints reporters broke the news early in the afternoon with the team confirming later. The dollar amount has yet to be revealed.
The former Mississippi State Bulldog is a former first-round pick from the 2019 NFL draft where the at the time Oakland Raiders took him 27th overall. In five seasons with the Raiders (2019-2022), Green Bay Packers (2022), Seattle Seahawks (2022), and the Saints (2023), the Columbia, Mississippi native, has played in 52 career regular season games with 39 starts and has recorded 280 tackles (176 solo), four interceptions, 15 passes defensed, one forced fumble, two fumble recoveries, 13 special teams stops and one coverage fumble recovery.
In 2023, Abram appeared in nine games with three starts for the Saints and recorded 24 tackles (14 solo), one interception, one pass defense, and one forced fumble.
Abram was a key contributor late in the season as he started at strong safety and posted five solo stops, his first interception as a Saint, his first career forced fumble, and a pass defense in a New Year’s Eve win at Tampa Bay. In the season finale win over Atlanta on January 7, 2024, Abram started for the second consecutive week and racked up a season-high nine tackles (four solo).
The current safety room for New Orleans is highlighted by Tyrann Mathieu since Marcus Maye was cut before the new league year. Others to look out for at safety are second-year player Jordan Howden while Ugo Amadi and J.T. Gray can be rotational pieces and will likely contribute on special teams.
