Following two critical road wins over Top 25 programs, Louisiana’s Meghan Schorman was named the Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week for softball on Tuesday.
Schorman becomes the second Cajun to get the honor already this season, with Sam Landry getting the first award on February 14. Schorman’s week was highlighted by a no-hitter against #25 UCF in Orlando.
The performance against the Knights on Mardi Gras Day was the first no-hitter of the Kentucky transfer’s career, facing just three batters over the minimum in the contest.
Last Saturday, Schorman led Louisiana to a 5-4 win over No. 14 LSU at Tiger Park. She controlled the Tigers’ lineup for the middle innings, giving the Cajuns the chance to score five unanswered runs to take the lead for good.
Schorman allowed just six hits in the two games, struck out 10 and batters only hit .158 against her in 10-2/3 innings of work. The no-hitter was UCF’s first since Oklahoma in the Super Regionals and the win over LSU was the Tigers’ first loss of the season.
This is the second SBC Pitcher of the Week award for Schorman, who won it last season for her efforts in the same Louisiana/LSU Crossover. She leads the Cajuns in wins, ERA, and strikeouts.
Louisiana now has claimed at least one Player or Pitcher of the Week award since it started in 2000, and now owns 96 all-time Pitcher of the Week awards in program history.
Louisiana will be on the road this week for the Longhorn Invitational in Austin, Texas hosted by No. 11 Texas. The Cajuns will battle McNeese, Princeton, Tennessee State, and two matchups with the Longhorns while in Texas.
Gerry Glasco and the Cajuns will match up with McNeese Friday at 2:00 p.m. and Texas at 7:00 p.m. to kick off the weekend.
