HOOVER, Ala. — Shelby Christy’s career at Mississippi State ended before it began. The third-year player announced on Twitter Tuesday that he’s transferring to Louisiana-Lafayette.
Christy never played a game for Mississippi State. After a shoulder injury as a freshman, the Bulldogs’ coaching staff elected to redshirt Christy in 2013. A torn anterior cruciate ligament kept the the 6-foot-3, 210 pound Christy sidelined for all of 2014.
Christy, a Geismar, Louisiana native, joined Mississippi State as a wide receiver. His size and skill rivaled that of De’Runnya Wilson as a freshman. Injuries never allowed Chrsity to tap into that potential.
Christy was set to play tight end this year for the Bulldogs. MSU has depth problems at the position. Gus Walley enters 2015 as the Bulldogs leading tight end with four career catches.
Mississippi State released an unofficial depth chart on Monday. Walley and Darrion Hutcherson were listed at tight end. Christy’s transfer moves B.J. Hammond to third string.
