South Carolina football head coach Steve Spurrier is retiring. The retirement is expected to be effective immediately.
An interim head coach for South Carolina is expected to be announced on Tuesday morning.
Spurrier, currently in his 11th season with the Gamecocks, has a record of 228-89-2 as a college coach. During his college career, he earned a national championship in 1996, seven conference titles, eleven bowl wins, and nine conference coach of the year awards.
Spurrier was close to stepping down at the end of last season after the Gamecocks dipped to 7-6 on the heels of three straight 11-win seasons, but he elected to return.
South Carolina has lost eight of their past nine SEC games dating to last season.
