Linebacker Shane Forman of Southern Lab and quarterback Landry Lyddy of Calvary Baptist headline the 2021 Louisiana Sports Writers Association’s Class 1A All-State team.
The 6-foot-2, 215-pound Forman recorded 87 tackles, seven sacks with three tackles for a loss on the season and was voted the Outstanding Defensive Player by a panel of sportswriters from across the state. In the championship game against Ouachita Christian, Forman totaled 12 tackles and had a fumble recovery as the Kittens won 38-14.
Both Forman and Calvary quarterback Landry Lyddy are returning LSWA all-state players. Lyddy posted another prolific passing season to earn LSWA’s Outstanding Offensive Player honors. The 6-1, 185-pound Lyddy signed early with Louisiana Tech and will report to Ruston for spring practices. He passed for 4,247 yards and 53 touchdowns on the season while leading the Cavaliers to the Division IV semifinals.
It took 82 years for championship magic to return to Homer, but Richie Casey guided the Pelicans to the LHSAA Class 1A title by defeating 1A powers Haynesville and Logansport along the way. That earned Casey LSWA Coach of the Year honors in a close vote over Southern Lab’s Darrell Asberry, who guided the Kittens to an 11-2 record and the Division IV state title.
Casey, a former Louisiana Tech wide receiver, wasn’t born the last time the Pelicans appeared in a state championship game (1985). He directed his program to an 11-3 mark and was joined on the All-State team by spectacular junior running back Ely’Jay Curry, offensive lineman Davion Champ and defensive back Takeldrick Webb.
