For Josh Fontenot and the Southside Sharks, 2022 can be described in a single word: historic.
In just its sixth year of existence, the Southside Sharks football team finished with a regular season record of 9-1, picking up wins over powerhouses in Acadiana, Carencro, Barbe, Sulphur, and others en route to its first District 3-5A title and a run to the state quarterfinals.
Now, Fontenot is hoping that his team builds off of the success from last season to propel them into the future.
IMPACT PLAYERS
Andrew Angelle QB, 5’11” 175 lbs, Sr
This may be Angelle’s first year as the starter, but he doesn’t lack experience. He’s run the unique flex bone offense in JV and signaled it for varsity games last season, so he knows the offense that Fontenot wants to run and has the weapons to help him run it successfully.
Cooper David LB, 5’8″ 175 lbs, Jr
David was a force to be reckoned with last year. He was consistently in the backfield making play after play while also contributing in coverage. With a full year of playing time under his belt, the young linebacker could explode in 2023.
Carson Goulas DB, 5’7″ 160 lbs, Jr
I like to call Goulas the little ball of dynamite. He stands at 5’7″ so he’s one of the smallest guys on the field, but you wouldn’t know it in the way he plays. He flies around the field with a nose for the football and can also help out on the offensive side as well when needed. He got a ton of experience as a sophomore and will be crucial for Ben Mouton’s defense in 2023.
HEAD COACH: Josh Fontenot
Fontenot started the Southside football program as the school’s first head coach. Before that, Fontenot was at Crowley High in Acadia Parish. With a career record of 58-39, Fontenot had the best coaching job of his career in 2022 and will look to continue the success of last season with a well-run offense and the “fireant” defense as Steve Peloquin calls them on the Southside radio broadcasts. They may be replacing a lot, but Fontenot will have the Sharks competing once again.
