Westminster Christian Academy – The Crusaders will look to improve from a 2-8 season in 2022. This will be head coach Byron Porter’s first year at WCA as he will corral a young team that has their players playing on both sides of the ball. This Crusaders team will have plenty of returning guys that will have a significant impact such as Jamari White, Michael Cunningham, and Bryce Guillory. It’ll be a work in progress as Porter lays down a foundation in a new age for the Crusaders.
IMPACT PLAYERS
Michael Cunningham RB/LB, 5’11”, 180 lbs, JR
Cunningham is expected to have a breakout season on both sides of the ball. He missed time last season but was able to make a return late in the year. He also is a significant contributor to Westminster Christian’s basketball and track and field teams. Cunningham’s goals for this season are to “break 1,000 yards… make it to the playoffs and hold my own on defense as a Will Linebacker.”
Bryce Guillory WR/FS, 6’2”, 190 lbs, SR
Guillory is switching positions this year. He played on the offensive line in 2022 but coach Porter is making the change because of his ability to move well and will provide length in the receiver room. He will play a significant role on offense even with this being a learning process for the senior. Guillory mentioned that he’s been improving as a player “showing up the whole summer, coming to workouts, grinding in and out of workouts at home by myself while no one’s watching.”
Jamari White WR/CB, 5’7”, 165 lbs, JR
White is a returning starter for this Crusaders squad as he saw a significant amount of time on both sides of the ball in 2022. He will play wide receiver and cornerback once again and will be the team’s main punt and kick returner this season. To be an even better player, White has been working to improve his “wind, so I can stay in the game and I’ve been working on my footwork as a DB.”
HEAD COACH: BYRON PORTER
Porter took the job as the head man for the Crusaders just a couple of months ago. WCA is coming off a year where they only went 2-8. Coach Porter and his son, Brandon Porter will implement a spread offense and a 4-2-5 defense headed into this 2023 season. Coach Porter mentioned that fans can expect Westminster Christian Academy football to play “fast, hard, physical, smart. Be fundamentally sound, technique sound; that’s the message we’ve been delivering… the kids have been working their tails off.”
