LAKE CHARLES — McNeese men’s basketball coach Will Wade has added another Division I player out of the NCAA Transfer Portal.
Texas Christian University guard Shahada Wells announced on Monday that he will continue his playing career with the McNeese Cowboys.
The 6-foot, 183-pound guard played two seasons at Tyler Junior College, earning NJCAA All-American honors after he averaged 21.6 points and 6 assists per game during the 2019-20 season.
Wells transferred to UT Arlington where he received Sun Belt Conference Second Team honors after he averaged 16.8 points and 3.4 rebounds while appearing in 24 games.
Wells then transferred to TCU where he played sparingly during the 2021-22 season but his playing time increased dramatically this past season. Wells helped the Horned Frogs to the NCAA Tournament as he appeared in 35 games (9 starts) and averaged 5.9 points and 2.3 assists per game.
Wells is the fifth player Wade has added through the NCAA Transfer Portal.
The others are CJ Felder (Florida), Zach Harvey (Cincinnati), Mike Saunders Jr. (Utah), and DJ Richards (UTSA). Wade also signed junior college star Javohn Garcia (College of Sequoias).
The McNeese men’s basketball program also saw a pair of former Cowboys announce that they were transferring elsewhere on Monday.
Donovan Oday signed with Cal State Fullerton on Monday while fellow guard Johnathan Massie transferred to Longwood University.
Oday appeared in 34 games (2 starts) last season for the Cowboys averaged 4.9 points and 2.1 assists per game, while Massie appeared in 34 games (31 starts) and averaged 10.5 points and 4.6 assists per game.
