LSU kept its season alive on Sunday after defeating Gonzaga 9-4 in an elimination game at the NCAA Eugene Regional. LSU will now face host Oregon later Sunday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Gonzaga struck first as Ernie Yake led off the game by hitting a double to right field off of LSU’s AJ Labas. Labas then hit Brett Harris and walked Tyler Rando to load the bases with no outs.
Labas was able to get the next batters to ground out but the Zags scored a run on each out. Labas was able to get a fly out to end the inning.
LSU answered in the bottom of the first.
Dylan Crews led off with a single to right center field and then was joined on the base paths after Zach Arnold singled to right field.
Morgan then laced a double down the left field line which drove in a run. Gavin Dugas then hit a triple off of Alec Gomez which scored two more runs.
Two batters later, Cade Doughty’s sacrifice fly brought home Dugas.
LSU would score two more runs in the bottom of the second inning. Gonzaga would plate a run in the top of the third as Andrew Orzel hit a RBI double.
The Tigers would score two more runs in the third inning and held a 8-3 lead heading to the fourth.
Gonzaga and LSU each scored a run each in the sixth inning, the Tigers’ run came courtesy of a solo home run by Arnold.
BIG NUMBER: 1
Gonzaga starting pitcher Alec Gomez lasted only one inning against LSU on Sunday. LSU scored six runs off of six hits off of Gomez who was pulled in the second inning.
PLAYERS OF THE GAME: Dylan Crews and Zach Arnold
LSU’s first two hitters in the lineup came up clutch for the Tigers in an elimination game. The two combined to go 5-for-9 with four runs scored, one double and one home run.
