After a disheartening loss to the UNO Privateers on Tuesday night, this was a crucial test for the Louisiana Ragin Cajuns (7-10) ahead of conference play this weekend. It’s safe to say they passed that test with a 6-5 extra innings win over the Southern Miss Golden Eagles (8-6).
How It Happened
Southern Miss struck first with an RBI single through the left side by Cole Donaldson, but Daniel Lahare would tie things up in the bottom of the second with an RBI double that landed into left-center field.
The Golden Eagles got it going once again in the top of the sixth with a pair of runs highlighted by an RBI single from Danny Lynch. However, the Cajuns quickly responded in the bottom frame, scoring off of a pair of passed balls to knot things up at four runs apiece.
Brennan Breaux broke the stalemate in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI single out to second base. The Golden Eagles would respond in the bottom of the eighth with a two-run double from Donaldson to give them a one-run lead. Lahare wasn’t having any of it though, laying down a sac bunt that got Hunter Kasuls across home plate to tie things up in the eighth.
It remained tied until the bottom of the 12th when Orynn Veillon sent the Cajuns faithful home happy with a solo shot to get the win.
Big Number: 14
While the Cajuns bats looked better than they did in the last three games against Loyola Marymount and UNO, they still had some struggles at the plate, striking out a whopping 14 times. It wasn’t what you wanted to see from the Cajuns that’s for sure
Player of the Game: Daniel Lahare
The man has had a hard time getting it going this season offensively. However, that changed at least for one night, going 2-of-3 from the dish and a pair of RBIs to boot including one that kept the Cajuns in the ballgame late.
