Not only are those robocalls annoying but they are also costing some Americans lots of money.
The Federal Communications Commission has just released a warning to be on alert for a new scam that is targeting Americans. It is called the “One Ring” or “Wangiri” scam. Victims will get a call in the middle of the night. Sometimes it will ring just once and sometimes it will ring multiple times. Do not be tempted to call these numbers back. If you do, you could be charged a large amount of money. The scammer wants you to call them to back so they can charge your account. The charge is similar to a charge from calling a 900 number. Some reports indicate that most of these calls have a “222” country code, a code from the West African continent. So far, New York and Arizona have been targeted.
Here are a few ways to protect yourself:
Never call an unfamiliar number especially if the number originates from overseas.
If you receive this type of call, report it immediately to the FCC. FCC Consumer Complaints
Make it a habit to check your phone bill and look for unknown charges.
And if you don’t make international calls, you could contact your phone provider and have all international calls blocked.
