Week One High School Football Roundup

The start of high school football in the Acadiana area delivered a variety of games.

Week one saw a new program in the Southside Sharks shut out their opponent, a comeback win for St. Thomas More and the Lafayette Mighty Lions dominating Jeanerette.

It all started with The Vermilion Parish Game of the Week. North Vermilion forced five turnovers for their 30-7 win over the Abbeville Wildcats.

Moving into Friday night, the Southside Sharks played in their program’s first-ever football game against the Northside Vikings. It was a convincing win as the Sharks scored 49 points while shutting the Vikings out.

St. Thomas More had a slow season-opener in their matchup against Holy Cross. The Cougars turned the ball over three times in their first four drives and allowed the Holy Cross Tigers to take the early 7-0 lead. But it was all STM from that point on. The Cougars rattled off 28 straight points for their season-opening win. Defensive back Josh Stevenson sealed the game with an interception return for a touchdown on Holy Cross’ final drive.

The Acadiana Wreckin’ Rams controlled their matchup over the Carencro Golden Bears by holding them to six points. They took control when Acadiana running back Lucky Brooks punched it in from the one-yard line to make it 13-6. Dillan Monette followed that up with a short touchdown run to increase the lead. The Wreckin’ Rams got off to the start they were looking for with a 28-6 win.

Mission accomplished in week one for Lafayette High. The Mighty Lions head coach Rob Pool said the goal was to start the season 1-0 and they did just that. Lafayette High earned a 66-20 win over Jeanerette. They will now set their sights on St. Martinville as they look to avenge last year’s 47-27 loss to the Tigers.

Other Games of Note:

Teurlings Catholic defeated Comeaux High 35-14.

The Kaplan Pirates defeated the Franklin Hornets 32-12.

Ascension Episcopal and Erath find themselves in a close final score, but the Ascension Episcopal Blue Gators got the 34-27 win.

The Lafayette Christian Academy Knights and the Westgate Tigers had a lower scoring game than the Packers and Bear (if you can believe it). The Knights grinded out a 7-0 win to start the 2019 campaign.

It was a shootout between Vermilion Catholic and Catholic – New Iberia. The teams combined for 75 points, but, in the end, Vermilion Catholic won 43-32.
