After leading the McNeese Cowboys to just their third Power Five win and first against a Big 10 school, Shahada Wells has been named Southland Conference Player of the Week, Louisiana Sports Writers Association Player of the Week, and the Lute Olson National Player of the Week.
Wells scored 30 points and 10 rebounds in an 87-76 victory over the Michigan Wolverines in Ann Arbor. This was the first double-double of Wells’ career as he added six assists and five steals.
Wells and the Cowboys were also named Dickie V’s Team of the Week after starting 11-2 on the year, their best start since 1972.
Wells, a native of Amarillo and a TCU transfer has now scored 30 or more three times this season and his national honor is the second of the season as he was named one of the five Oscar Robertson Players of the Week when the Cowboys beat UAB and UT Martin in December.
On the year, Wells leads the team and is second in the Southland, scoring 19.4 points per game. He leads the league in field goals made, steals per game, and total steals, ranking 12th and 22nd nationally.
McNeese completed non-conference play with an 11-2 overall record and will play Texas A&M-Commerce this Saturday to open league play.
