You watch enough baseball, you’ll see some weird stuff happen on the diamond. Saturday afternoon at the Tigue might be one of the weirdest in recent memory, with six runs in the sixth being the key to the Lousiana Ragin Cajuns evening up their series against App State by the score of 7-4.
How It Happened:
The Mountaineers started things off in the first with a leadoff triple from Alex Leshock which was followed up by a single from Luke Drumheller to give them a 1-0 lead. The Cajuns finally got on the board in the bottom of the fifth with a two-out RBI single from Hayden Cantrelle to even things up at one.
Phillip Cole put App State back on top in the sixth with an RBI double. However, with two outs in the bottom of the sixth, things started to go off the rails for the Mountaineers with four straight walks giving the Cajuns the lead. That was followed up by two runs scoring off of a single from Cantrelle. Things got even weirder later in he inning when O’Neal Lochridge scored off of what was called a balk. Brennan Breaux wrapped upNextthe inning with an RBI single to make it a 7-2 ballgame.
The Mountaineers responded with an RBI double from Drumheller to cut into the lead, but Connor Cooke was able to stop the Mountaineers offense and get out of the inning unscathed. Things looked dicey with the bases loaded, but Logan Savoy was able to record the save and even up the series.
Big Number: 6
The Cajuns got a lot of free passes and four of them wound being huge in turning the tide in Saturday’s matchup. Six walks don’t seem like much on the surface, it wound being a big difference in the outcome of Saturday’s win
Player of the Game: Hayden Cantrelle
The former Teurlings Rebel is finding his stride. After a solo home run on Friday night, Cantrelle went 3-for-4 with 3 RBIs. A very solid night for the Cajuns shortstop, who is sitting on a 12-game hit streak.
