Welcome everyone to the latest edition of #4Downs breaking down every LSU game. This week, we look at the win over Mizzou.
1st Down: O’ What A Night!
With Coach O making his debut as the coach of the Bayou Bengals, it was expected that this team would be playing for their guy. However, I don’t think anyone expected them to play that well, setting a school record for an SEC game with 634 yards of offense. If that’s a sign of things to come, LSU might be looking at hanging on to Ed Orgeron.
2nd Down: Guice Shows What He Can Really Do
With Leonard Fournette out another game due to his ankle injury, Derrius Guice was able to give the Tigers a look into the future with a performance that probably surprised some people, but not the folks at LSU. The performance from the sophomore was especially good because he went off for some longer runs and showed some fancy footwork throughout the night. The LSU fans should be excited for when he starts next season (barring Fournette returning for his senior year).
3rd Down: LSU Shuts It Down On Third Down
One of the most important stats in football is third down conversion rate. If you can hold a team to under 50 percent, most of the time you win. This was no different with LSU’s defense holding Mizzou down to 4-of-14 on third down. The defense of LSU has always been the highlight of the team, and this was no different with some big defensive plays like Tre’Davious White intercepting a pass and bringing pressure to one of the better QBs in the league stat wise in Drew Lock.
4th Down: Looking Ahead
LSU’s toughest opponents are ahead of them and they will need a big game out of everybody if they want to turn things around after a 2-2 start. Coach Orgeron has his players behind him so it looks like the sky is the limit to start his tenure as the interim head coach. The biggest issue moving forward will be injuries like with Will Clapp who was wearing a sling as the game ended. The offensive line is taking a big hit with Clapp looking like he’ll miss some significant time.
