Saints Defense Steps Up, Snaps Preseason Losing Streak

If the defense that showed up on Sunday night does what they did against the Los Angeles Chargers, this 2017 season could be a little bit better than expected for the New Orleans Saints.

That performance combined with an early offensive flurry led to the Saints snapping a 10-game preseason losing streak by the score of 13-7.

After forcing the Chargers to go three and out on the opening drive, the Saints only needed one play to get seven points on the board. That one play was Alvin Kamara going virtually untouched for 50 yards.

Wil Lutz increased the Saints lead later in the first quarter with a line drive from 53-yards out going through the uprights.

That remained the score between the two teams until the fourth quarter until New Orleans native Dexter McCoil picking off Ryan Nassib and taking it 99 yards to cut away at the New Orleans Saints lead.

The Saints officially put the game out of reach with a methodical 14-play drive that took over six minutes off the clock that was capped off by a 26-yarder from Wil Lutz.

The Saints will return to action on Saturday against the Houston Texans with kickoff set for 7 pm.

Extra Points:

Defense Short Circuits Chargers: The biggest takeaway from the Saints victory was the defensive performance. While both offenses weren’t highpowered, the Saints held the Chargers to 2.2 yards per play. That is a huge number that if they can do that along with putting more points on the board, this is going to be a playoff team. However, this wasn’t exactly against Phillip Rivers as he didn’t see a snap.
