Georgia Southern Dominates on Ground to Take Down Cajuns

Cajuns Crowd

The triple option of Georgia Southern (2-9, 2-5 Sun Belt) proved to be too much for the Louisiana Ragin Cajuns (5-6, 4-3 Sun Belt) on Saturday night as the Eagles came away with a 34-24 victory.

After forcing a three-and-out, Georgia Southern goes on an 11-play drive, capped off by an eight-yard run by Wesley Fields to take an early 7-0 lead. The Eagles forced another three-and-out and made it 14-0 before the first quarter finished with Shai Werts connecting with Ellis Richardson on a wide-open touchdown pass.

Tyler Bass made it 17-0 early in the second quarter with a chip-shot field goal, but the Cajuns responded on the very next drive with Darrius Hoggins going 75 yards for the touchdown to cut into the lead. This was the longest offensive play for the Cajuns all season.

The score remained at 17-7 at the half, but Werts began to put the game out of reach with a short run into the endzone to make it 24-7. The Cajuns started to fight back with a 50-yarder by Stevie Artigue, but an interception by Jordan Davis made it 30-10 late in the third quarter.

Davis put the team on his back in the fourth quarter with an 18-yard pass to Ryheem Malone to make it 30-17. However, the Eagles put the final nail in with a 77-yard run from Wesley Kennedy setting up L.A. Ramsby with a dive on fourth and goal from the one-yard line.

The Cajuns will wrap up the 2017 season against Appalachian State (7-4, 6-1 Sun Belt) with kickoff set for 1:30 pm.
