What a dominant performance by LSU (22-13, 8-6 SEC) on Saturday evening. Much like last night’s ballgame, the Tigers came out of the gates strong early and came away with a 14-5 victory over Tennessee (21-16, 5-9 SEC).
How It Happened
LSU fired out of the gates with a five-run first inning, capped off by a two-run triple out to right field by Jake Slaughter. Austin Bain made it 6-0 in the bottom of the sixth with a single up the middle, scoring Zach Watson.
The Volunteers finally got on the board in the top of the fifth with a three-run inning kickstarted by a solo shot by Nico Mascia. However, the Tigers put the finishing touches on the win with a three run fifth followed up by a four run seventh inning highlighted by a two-run blast out to left center field by Jake Slaughter, making it 13-3.
Ma’Khail Hilliard improved to 7-2 on the season allowing three runs off of five hits in six innings of work. The freshman also walked one and struck out six on the evening. Caleb Gilbert earned his first save of the season, allowing two runs off of four hits and struck out six in three innings of work.
Big Number: 17
The Tigers offense was alive on Saturday, putting up 17 hits on the evening. What’s even more interesting is that they only had four extra base hits on the evening.
Player of the Game: Antoine Duplantis
Mr. Consistency had another solid evening, going three-of-five with three RBIs on the evening.
