Louisiana Hangs On to Take Down Texas State in Series Opener

Posted by clintdomingue on May 11, 2018 in Blogs, Latest News

The Louisiana Ragin Cajuns (29-21, 15-10 Sun Belt) were able to start off their weekend series on the right foot in San Marcos with a 7-4 win over Texas State (23-25-1, 11-14 Sun Belt).

How It Happened

The Cajuns drew first blood in the top of the third with Daniel Lahare scoring off of a fielder’s choice by Gavin Bourgeois. Things continued to come up all Cajuns in the top of the fifth with a three-run inning that got kickstarted by a one-out RBI single up the middle.

However, the Bobcats responded with a solo shot by Derek Scheible in the bottom of the fifth to get on the board. Later in the inning, Dalton Shuffield got a two-out rally going, which was followed up by an RBI single out to right field by Jonathan Ortega to get within one run.

Tyler Stover kept the Bobcats out of reach in the sixth with an RBI double out to right center. Texas State responded in the seventh with another solo home run from Ryan Newman, but the door was slammed in the eighth when Louisiana got a pair of runs across thanks to two RBI singles by Cantrell and Kennon Fontenot.

Colten Schmidt improved to 7-0 on the season, allowed four runs off of eight hits and struck out four in six and a third innings of work. Logan Stoelke got his ninth save of the year allowing only two hits, walked three, and struck out three in two and two-thirds innings of work.

Big Number: 16

The Cajuns bats woke up in a big way on Friday night, racking up 16 hits against the Bobcats.

Player of the Game: Hayden Cantrelle

‘Cantrelle had one of the best nights of his young career, going five-for-five along with two RBIs.

Next Up: Game Two of Series; First Pitch 4 pm
