Texas Rallies in Ninth to Complete Sweep of LSU

Posted by clintdomingue on March 3, 2019 in Blogs, Latest News

Headed into the bottom of the ninth on Sunday, it felt like the LSU Tigers (8-3) were going to avoid getting swept by the Texas Longhorns (10-3). That wasn’t the case though as the Longhorns rallied back and came away with a 7-6 win.

How It Happened:

LSU struck first when Zach Watson hit a two-out RBI single to center field in the third. That didn’t last long though as Texas responded in the bottom of the third with an RBI double from Eric Kennedy followed up by a two-run blast by Austin Todd to take a 3-1 lead.

The Tigers tied things up in the fifth when Mathis scored off of a wild pitch and Josh Smith scoring off of a groundout by Watson. The Tigers then took the lead with another two-run inning in the sixth capped off by an RBI double from Zach Watson.

After LSU extended their lead to 6-3 in the seventh inning, the Longhorns started to rally back in the eighth when Ryan Reynolds hit an RBI double out to right field. The bottom of the ninth started off with a questionable hit by pitch call. After that, the Longhorns put up got a pair of runs across with Duke Ellis hitting an RBI single and Masen Hibbeler scoring off of a fielder’s choice to tie things up. Then Todd approached the plate and was able to walk it off with an RBI single up the middle to give Texas a series sweep against the top-ranked LSU Tigers.

Big Number: 11

While the Tigers didn’t walk as many batters as they did on Saturday, the pitching staff had a hard time getting out of the inning after Eric Walker left in the bottom of the fifth. The Longhorns offense was outstanding on Sunday with 11 hits on the afternoon.

Player of the Game: Austin Todd

The Longhorns right fielder had a solid weekend, but Sunday was definitely his time to shine, going two-of-four from the dish including a two-run bomb.

Next Up: Wednesday vs Holy Cross; First Pitch at 6:30 pm
