LSU Stifles Holy Cross in Midweek Matchup

Posted by clintdomingue on March 6, 2019 in Blogs, Latest News

Holy Cross (1-11) got a couple of runs early off of Ma’Khail Hillard, but the LSU Tigers (9-3) responded with a solid offensive performance resulting in a 9-2 win.

How It Happened:

The Crusaders drew first blood when Ben Malgeri ripped one out to left field to give them an early 1-0 lead. Antoine Duplantis responded with a solo shot of his own in the bottom of the first, but this one landed in the right-field bleachers to tie things up. However, the Crusaders took a 2-1 lead off of a fielding error by Hal Hughes, getting Alex Gionis home safely.

The Tigers responded in the third with Hughes scoring off of a sac fly, taking the lead back in the fourth inning when Daniel Cabrera hit a solo shot out to right center field. The game was busted wide open in the bottom of the fifth when LSU racked up four runs, highlighted by a two-run single by Daniel Cabrera. Brock Mathis officially put the finishing touches on things in the bottom of the sixth when he hammered one to left field to make it 8-2.

Big Number: 4

That four-run inning was crucial for the Tigers to crush Holy Cross and their dreams of pulling off a monumental upset. It just shows how this team can turn it on at any given moment.

Player of the Game: Daniel Cabrera

Cabrera was on fire tonight with two hits and three RBIs on the evening, highlighted by a two-run single that kickstarted the big fifth inning.

Next Up: Friday vs Cal; First Pitch at 6:30 pm
